Voter Rolls Purged Nationwide
The Brennan Center for Justice issued an alarming report Sept. 30, 2008 on improper purging of voter rolls across the country.
During every election, eligible, registered voters arrive at the polls to find that their names have been removed from the voter rolls.
The most famous example of improper purging occured in Florida during the 2000 Presidential election, when thousands of eligible voters were improperly taken off voter rolls as "felons." In 2004, the Florida Secretary of State again tried to use a list of felons to purge voter rolls, but it the list was so problematic that it was scrapped after media organizations found it countained numerous eligible voters.
The Brennan Center's report makes the need for a single standard for purging voter rolls clear, so eligible voters are not turned away from their polling stations on Election Day when it is too late to address the problem.
Multi-State Comparison of Elections Laws
In our multi-state comparison of elections standards, we're asking questions of officials in dozens of states and counties where we've witnessed chronic election-day problems, such as broken machines and long lines at polling places. We want to find out what systems these counties and states have in place to ensure that all Americans can vote without fighting long lines, unreliable machines, and voter intimidation. Stay tuned for the complete results.
